You’re So Fucking Special. I’m A Creep
I’m going to say something wildly unpopular and terribly uncool. I don’t like Radiohead post OK Computer. And after many listens, I don’t think In Rainbows is the brilliant album music critics say it is.
A few weeks ago, Carrie Brownstein of Sleater-Kinney dared to confess on NPR and on her blog that she didn’t like Radiohead and that In Rainbows was one of her biggest musical disappointments of 2007. But she couched it in the nicest of terms, blaming herself for not singing the praises of Sir. Thom and his merry band of depressives. Oh, Carrie. Cut the self-flagellation. That took guts. I feel exactly the way you do about Radiohead. To quote Mer, "I feel a little January" about them.
I don’t like music where I can’t find its emotional center. What is Thom Yorke offering, other than a nihilistic vision of the future? What is Radiohead’s music about, other than despair and bleakness? Must the glass not only be half empty, but “broken and filled with poison?”
After OK Computer, Yorke turned out the musical mash-up of a paranoid android and Steven Hawkins, um, I mean Stephen Hawking. This is what every song sounded like to me: “Blip, blip, blip, I’m depressed. Blip. Blip. Blip. It’s all in vain. Beep. Beep. Beep. I’m a sexless, sad little robot.”
As I’ve said before, I generally use music to elevate me. I don’t need Radiohead dragging me down with them. I can go there myself, thank you. But after all the hype surrounding In Rainbows, I thought perhaps I’d been wrong. That I’d judged too quickly. Come back Thom, all is forgiven…
Even Nigel (my father) dug in a little. He’d been an earlier fan of Radiohead’s works, and like me, left the train after OK Computer. But this Christmas, he asked for Amnesiac, Kid A and had already downloaded In Rainbows. “There’s something interesting going on in that music,” he said at the dinner table a few weeks ago. I took that as code that there were some musical complexities in Radiohead that had passed me by. I generally trust his judgment on these things. He was an early GBV enthusiast, after all.
But no matter how hard I try, Radiohead is never going to be one of my favorite bands. I’ve listened to In Rainbows many times over the last few weeks. And I say: Thom baby, lighten up! I swear to you, it won't be winter forever. The ice is slowly melting. Here comes the sun.

I agree with your feelings about Radiohead.
Also, and this is totally nerdy, it's Stephen Hawking that you meant to refer to. I think Steven Hawkins is maybe the pizza man I flirted with at the door last night.
:-D
I like Radiohead. Then again, I'm a depressed, sexless, sad little robot who thinks it's all in vain.
Blip.
Thom, Ed, John, Phil, Colin, you know how people discuss how influenced the lot of you are by The Smiths and The Pixies? That's great, excellent bands. Incredible bands. So do me a favor, whip out The Queen Is Dead and Doolittle, fire up a bowl or whatever it is you do to elevate your minds, really listen to those albums, then take yourselves back to around 1994, and remember how to write a FUCKING MELODY.
Sorry about that, I guess baby's got the bends.
I've got something I can laugh about!!
I feel good, in a special way!
I'm in love and it's a sunny day!
Good day, sunshine!!!!!
So we're telling Thom Yorke, all he needs is love?
Naturally, I celebrate Radiohead's entire catalog, even if I never listen to "Amnesiac" or "Kid A"
I just had to reply to this. I don't mind you not liking Radiohead, but as a fan, I do think you're missing out on something (don't be afraid, I'm not going to try and specify what that something is.)
But there's no reason why you should listen to music you find hard to appreciate. I hated Radiohead when I first heard it, but a year later, I don't know, I just 'got' their album 'Hail to the Thief'. It took me another 3 years to 'get' Kid A, another year to 'get' Amnesiac and I still don't 'get' The Bends. So, maybe you're time will come, and maybe not :)
What I don't understand however, is why many people think Radioheads music is so depressing? I mean, they have a lot of melancholy songs, and lot's of very romantic tracks (how in the world would you describe Thom Yorke as nihilist?? He's the EXACT opposite, well, in my eyes he is.. ok, I admit, sometimes opposites are hard to distinguish). Anyway, I find
I know they are a great, great band. No doubt. And I know what you mean about people slagging off music they label depressing. People say that about the Smiths, but that's because they don't listen to the lyrics. I suppose it's this. I just don't find moments of joy in their music. Reflection, yes. Beauty, absolutely. But light hearted, not so much. In all seriousness, I'd like to be convinced. Show me the way and I will at least attempt to follow...
